Avita Health System now offers specialized services for individuals struggling with opioid and alcohol addiction. Led by Dr. P. Stephen Novack, Avita Addiction Recovery is a new program that provides one-on-one outpatient medical treatment for patients who want to overcome substance abuse and live a life free of addiction.
Treatment for substance abuse disorders at Avita Addiction Recovery includes medically-managed withdrawal and medication therapy. Medically-managed withdrawal is the process of using medications safely with the least amount of side effects and symptoms. Quitting the use of drugs or alcohol can be extremely difficult, even dangerous, which is why it is important for a medical professional to manage the withdrawal process. Withdraw symptoms may include mood changes, agitation, anxiety, pain, flu-like symptoms, nausea, shaking, headaches, and cravings for the substance that the patient is attempting to quit.
Medication therapy may be used during detox to reduce withdrawal symptoms and can be used long-term to help alleviate cravings and prevent relapse. Commonly used prescriptions drugs for opioid use disorders include Suboxone®, Sublocade®, and sublingual or injectable long-acting buprenorphine. For alcohol use disorder, medications such as Vivitrol® and acomprosate may be used.
