PLASTIC and RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
Is there a difference between the two?
The short answer is....yes. Plastic surgery consists of both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, with distinct differences between the two. The type required is dependent on the underlying reasons for the procedure. Cosmetic surgery is elective and commonly performed when a patient would like to improve their appearance through procedures such as liposuction, breast lifts and/or reductions, nose reshaping, facelifts, tummy tucks, and body contouring following weight loss. Less invasive procedures include microdermabrasion, facial fillers and chemical peels.
Reconstructive surgery, on the other hand, may be medically necessary and often times improves a damaged or abnormal part of the body. For example, women who have had breast cancer may need breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Other examples might be reconstruction following skin cancer removal or facial reconstruction after an automobile accident. Although reconstructive surgery does in fact improve a person’s appearance, the main focus is on regaining functionality to a specific part of the body.
Consultations and minor procedures are done in our Ontario Richland Mall office. If your procedure requires a more complex surgery, then Dr. Bodjanac will be performing your surgery at Galion Community Hospital.
A chemical peel is a treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin, as well as even out pigment variations, using a chemical solution that causes dead skin to eventually peel off. A chemical peel may also remove pre-cancerous skin growths, soften acne facial scars, and control acne.
There are several types of facial fillers that aid in wrinkle reduction and help sustain a youthful appearance. Among these are:
Microdermabrasion is an anti-aging treatment that softens fine lines and wrinkles, helps smooth textured skin, decreases the appearance of scarring and pore size, and reduces age spots.
BODY CONTOURING AFTER WEIGHT LOSS
Body contouring after weight loss reduces the excess skin and fat that is left behind from the expansion of skin and lack of tissue elasticity that often occurs after losing weight.
A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. This procedure will result in larger, fuller, and more shapely breasts.
BREAST LIFT (Mastopexy)
A breast lift is a surgical procedure used to raise and reshape sagging breasts. A mastopexy is also used to reduce the size of the areola and the darker skin surrounding the nipple.
BREAST REDUCTION (Mammaplasty)
A breast reduction involves removing the fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. This makes the breasts smaller and lighter, relieving pressure in the back, neck, and shoulders.
This procedure corrects drooping brows and improves horizontal lines and furrows on your forehead, commonly formed by aging. Years of facial expressions and environmental effects causes these changes in your skin.
Liposuction removes excess fat from deposits located between the skin and the muscle. Most common areas for liposuction are the abdomen, hips, and thighs
EAR SURGERY (Otoplasty)
This procedure can be done to correct a variety of ear problems, particularly protruding ears.
EYELID SURGERY (Blepharoplasty)
This procedure removes fat and excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This surgery can also correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes. Patients who complain about having a tired appearance will inquire about this procedure.
A facelift removes excess fat and tightens the muscles and skin of your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone or in conjuction with other procedures.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser hair removal is available for all skin types, including very light and very dark skin, and most hair colors. Although it is not a guaranteed permanent solution, studies have shown that areas where hair is removed by lasers can generally remain hair free longer than by most any other method.
